San Jacinto.\u00a0 We did make it on time to Phoenix, dropped off the rental car and did our first &#8220;hike&#8221;, complete with packs&#8211;30 minutes to a motel by the airport!<\/p>\n<p><strong>DETAILS: <\/strong>We made it all the way to Los Banos by 10:30pm on Wednesday night.\u00a0 We had planned to get up at 4 am, but the clocks all failed us this\u00a0morning\u2014Fixit&#8217;s watch alarm didn&#8217;t go off and the motel clock was wrong,\u00a0and we didn&#8217;t\u00a0realize it\u00a0till 5:30&#8211;yikes!\u00a0 We rushed to get up, and stepped out into a very chilly, windy\u00a0morning under pearly cloud skies.\u00a0We \u00a0But the end result was good\u2014no Los Angeles freeway gridlock!<\/p>\n<p>As soon as it was light enough, I started sewing more padding onto Fixit&#8217;s pack shoulder straps.\u00a0 We grabbed some breakfast at a gas station and kept going.\u00a0 It was fun to pass by good ol&#8217; PCT landmarks&#8211;Angeles Crest Highway, Big Bear, etc., and when we crossed the PCT at San Gorgonio Pass we were looking up at snow on Mt. San Jacinto and the Fuller Ridge!\u00a0 Have fun, PCT hikers!<\/p>\n<p>Then we were into the deserts&#8211;all kinds.\u00a0 Sandy ones, rocky ones, with all kinds of different desert plants (the saguaro are amazing, and the broom was in bloom). We admired the\u00a0very gnarly &#8220;horned&#8221; looking mountains that\u00a0were sometimes in ridges and sometimes in rocky islands.\u00a0 There were big puffy white ships of\u00a0clouds sailing by with black shadows below.\u00a0 Fixit commented that when he was in Alaska, the Eskimos would complain if they had to go someplace with a lot of trees.\u00a0 &#8220;You can&#8217;t see the sky here,&#8221; they would say.\u00a0 Well, the desert lands we saw today were definitely lands with SKY!<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-162\" src=\"http:\/\/montybillpct.net\/blog2016\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/april-28-2.jpg\" alt=\"april-28-2\" width=\"251\" height=\"334\" srcset=\"https:\/\/montybillpct.net\/blog2016\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/april-28-2.jpg 600w, https:\/\/montybillpct.net\/blog2016\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/april-28-2-225x300.jpg 225w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 251px) 100vw, 251px\" \/>\u00a0In Phoenix, we found our\u00a0motel, left our packs in the room, and drove first to locate Greyhound, then to rental car return\u2014long lines of cars. Walked back\u201415 minutes to Greyhound, where we\u00a0discovered their schedule changed two months ago, so the time on our tickets was wrong. Good thing we stopped at the station!
